Justice for George Floyd
Like many people in Champaign-Urbana and across the country, we at FirstFollowers are outraged at the racist murder of George Floyd. Hundreds of thousands of people have demonstrated across the nation to demand justice for this man. In our own community, several thousand people came into the streets June 1st, to share their grief, express their anger and protest systemic racism. We salute the organizers of this event and all those who took part. At the same time, we recognize that our community still has challenges of its own. While demonstrations are powerful - we also need resources and changes in policy. Local authorities need to support community efforts at healing and restorative justice. They need to find new ways to provide income, housing and mental health services to local people who have been impacted by violence and incarceration, especially the Black community. Let us remember George Floyd by continuing to struggle for justice in our community.
